Kaya Mo Rin!

A speech delivered in one of the graduation ceremonies of the the UP College of Engineering

Pero ni minsan, hindi pa ako nakakakita ng unibersidad na nagbigay ng “Hung on and managed to graduate despite nearly getting kicked-out during his academic stay” award.

Grades are everything.

I’ve been on both sides.

This is a rebellion. I raise my middle finger to every professor, over-achiever, naysayer and detractor that told me that I can’t make it. I raise my middle finger to every valedictory or graduation speech that only gratifies the university, those who were achievers in school or those who gratify the country when it’s supposed to be the graduate’s moment of glory. You are supposed to acknowledge EVERYONE. Even those who failed many times.

SYNTHESIZER 211B

To be able to fully comprehend the presentation, the synthesizer takes a vital role in bringing various scenes into one cohesive whole.  Please include all the activities took place from the planning stage until the actual presentation.  To make it more realistic and appealing to viewers, incorporate the pictures taken and videos captured.  I highly encourage you follow the synthesis created by the previous batches.

If you are finished with it, please provide me your respective link to your output. The deadline of submission is on the 10th of September 2011, Saturday.  FAILURE TO MEET THE DEADLINE WOULD MEAN ZERO.

Let me remind you that the actual ROLE PLAYING inside the classroom is considered as your PRACTICAL EXAMINATION, while the SYNTHESIS is your GROUP PROJECT for Midterms.

I would appreciate your prompt response on this matter.

iLearn..

It is good to know that some of you have learned a lot from the forum on "Everyday Economics",which was conducted by Dr. Antong Victorio, MPP, Ph. D. last August 31, 2011.

To give credit to their remarkable understanding, I would like to feature them on this post.

Below is their verbatim statements about it.

"One thing I learned fromthe forum is, well, how to be economically efficient.  The speaker once mentioned about the seatings in a jeepney.  He said, if you were to ride a jeepney, where would you seat? passenger's seat? at the back of the driver? or at the most back of the jeepney?  One thing/answer popped into my mind, it would be at the most back of the jeepney, because it is what I always do.  In my case, it is pretty efficient because I no longer have to walk when I am about to get out of the jeepney.  But in the case of the new riders/passengers, it is obviously inefficient because they will have to walk further, and experience the "masikip" inside of the jeepney."

GAYOL, Gale

"The seminar was divided into three parts.  These were definition of economics, law of demand and about crimes.  From these talks, I learned that economics is everywhere, we feel it everyday.

First part of the talk was definition of economics, and economics is a study of value-maximizing behavior, to include self-interest, altruism, guilt, shame.  The speaker emphasized guilt and shame.  Guilt is internal while shame is external and it is how other people think one's behavior.  But he told us that there is a new definition of economy that is caring about each other.

Next was law of demand.  He used example of taking care of child and riding a jeepney to relate law of demand in our everyday life.  But taking care of a child will not affect the law of demand because it doesn't relate the price of money.

Lastly, he talked about crimes.  According to him, crime is result of lack of understanding, lack of education.  Lack of education means many children can't go to school, and somehow that tells us the condition of country's economy.

I was disappointed with other students specially who seated at the back. Even the guest is talking, they were so noisy and noisy.  I was shamed as an Atenean.  The noise was like in a zoo.  I feel sorry to the speaker that we show him disrespect behavior."

                                                                            YAMAGATA, Tamami (2A-HRM)

"My learnings about the forum on Everyday Economics that was conducted by Dr. Antong Victorio, MPP, PhD

*What is Economics?
-According to Gary Becker, it is the study of value-maximizing behaviour.
-According to Steven Levitt, who is the author of Freakonomics, it is the study of incentives.
*Some motivators: Self-interest, altruism, guilt, shame

*GUILT VS. SHAME
-Guilt ---> internal (what conscience says)
-Shame ----> external (what others say/think of you)

Example given in the forum: "Picture"
1st took - the child was sleeping
2nd took - the child woke up and smiled at the camera.  He did this
because he felt shame, not guilt.

*The law of Demand
-pervasive and powerful for explaining everyday experiences
           -nto always work outside self-interest

Example given in the forum:  The case of fines for late pick-ups.
-It was not the price/money that motivates the parents, but the
                                                 guilt/shame they felt.
Therefore, prices are not strong motivations.

*Negative Externality.
         -Example: pollution (caused by others)
-Tax a commodity ---> to lessen pollution

*Once people are altruistic, losses of negative externality are automatically removed.
*Incentives create unexpected outcomes.

The forum on Everyday Economics is such a great help for me to learn more about the subject, economics.  For all the things I've learned in that day, I am confident that I can use this in my everyday life journey from now on."

GALENDEZ, Tessa Dianne A.

BITAW! totoo talaga yang ginasabi mo!

How can one distinguish a Davaoeño from a Cebuano?
Or to a Cagayanon? . . . Difficult? . . . .Easy.

Davaoenos are one of the most unique people in the world.

We can easily stand out if we are placed in a crowd of Filipinos from other parts of the country. And how, you say? . . Language.

Davao City, aptly called the melting pot of  cultures, is home to many dialects. Tagalog, Cebuano, Ilonggo, Ilocano, Chavacano, Moslem, Bicolano. Name it,. . . . we'll speak it.

If the Filipino language is a composition of all the dialects and
languages in the Philippines, you might as well say that the language we speak in Davao City is the real Filipino language, and not Tagalog.

However, since it is a hodgepodge of different  tongues, it is sometimes funny to hear our language  "bastardizing" , for lack of better word, the other  dialects. Strangely, that distinguishes us from the  rest. . . . . Try these...
In stating a fact, Manilenos say, "Talagang mabait si Weng."
In Davao, we say. "Mabait bitaw gyud si Weng".
Too assertive? One asks, "Ano nga `yong  pangalan mo?".

In Davao we say, "Ano gani `yong pangalan mo?" (or worst, ngalan)

When somebody commits a mistake or surprises someone, we always never fail to say, "Halaka!". Duh!

We are fond of re-constructing the language.

  1) There's the GI+ verb, such as,"Gisabi kasi ni  Helen na mag-absent si Bernerd bukas", or "Ginanon ni Lalai si Belinda sa mukha". You'll never find  "ginanon" in any dictionary, I swear to God.

  2) There's the KA+adjective, as in, "Kaputi gyud ng  mukha ni Yang-yang" or "Kapayat gyud ni Jason  ngayon."

  3) The MAKA+ verb form, such as, "Maka-inis talaga si Albert, uy!" or "Maka-uwi talaga ako ng matagal ngayon".

  4) The NAG+ verb, as in,"Nagsabi kasi si Tita Prescy na pupunta daw tayo ng airport" or "Hindi pa man siya nagdating, uy!"

Adding new words or new meanings to old words to the dictionary is one of our favorite past time.
NAKIN: . . . ."Alam man nakin `yan ba!", "Saan nakin kita nakita gani?".

KU-AN:  . . . ."Ku-an daw ang gawin mo", "Si ku-an kasi ano  masyado". (No sense at all.)

ANO: . . .  . "Na-ano ka diyan, Bryan!", "Ano man yan si  Van, uy!".

HA:  . . . . ."Lake-ha na ng tiyan ni Lulu uy!", "Gwapa-ha  niya uy!"

BEH: . . . .
To express disgust over someone, we utter, "Gago  kaba diay para maniwala sa kanya", or "Ano man yansiya uy!", or when pestered when doing something,  you'd quip, "Huwag lagi ba!"

On the other hand, when we praise somebody's extra special deed or talent, our  Davaoeno tongue slips words like,"Kuyaw lagi `yan  siya!", "Galenga niya uy!", "Ayusa niya uy!",  "Kuyawa ni Orly uy!" or "Hindi ako makatu-o sa ginawa niya!" .

Hay, makatawa talaga. Ooops!

There are just so too many words to mention. Just check out the words you spew everyday. Sometimes you just laugh at yourself when you realize that you've just said those very words.

No matter how long you stay in Manila or in the States, the moment you're back to Davao, your tongue feels as at home as you do.

Language is the very soul of every being. You just can't do anything about it.

Or as how we say it, . . . "Anohin man natin yan?"

  Hope you enjoy reading this...

BITAW! totoo talaga yang ginasabi mo!
